The Gap Semester is an annual event that encourages Raffles Institution students to go on a learning journey outside of school, even on trips that take them far abroad.

Darling Visual Communications was asked to design Raffles Institution’s Gap Semester branding and publication design. We were immediately dispatched on a trip down memory lane. School exercise books, in which we doodled and sketched, seem like an apt starting point for a project that, itself, was in the process of being sketched out.

We wanted the Raffles boys to pencil down their thoughts and approach their gap semester, consciously making the effort to analyse, reflect and record their thought processes as they entered a brave new world radically different from the cloistered hallways of secondary school. Inside these seemingly simple, quaint little books is a colourful, vibrant labyrinth of self-exploration – the perfect brain-repository for a journey that in essence is the gateway to new and hitherto unexplored territory.
